Sacred Hearts was happy
to be in the state championship game for the first
time. Kamehameha-Hawaii was making its 3rd
straight appearance in the title game, having won the
state title in 2005. In this game the championship
veterans prevailed. The Lady Warriors defeated the
Lancers 57-30 for the Division II State Championship in
the Hawaiian Airlines HHSAA Girls State Basketball
Tournament.
The Warriors took an
early lead and just kept on going, doubling up on the
Lancers at halftime with a 32-16 lead. Sacred Hearts
could not adjust to the Kamehameha pressure defense
which limited the Lancer offense to only 1 point in the
3rd quarter.
The Lancers were riding
high coming into the game with an undefeated record in
ILH play and dominating their opponents in the
Tournament. Coach Alan Matsui had his team play
disciplined basketball with good shot selections and
solid ball handling.
But the Lady Warriors
were more physical and athletic. They applied a
pressure defense that confused the Lancer guards and
limited their offense.
Sacred Hearts only shot
23% from the field and committed 26 turnovers. Leading
the scoring was Nalani Bayne with 10 points. Raecha
Kauahikaua added 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Bayne
was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Warriorsâ?? Tabitha
Eseroma had a slow start but still ended up with 9
points and a game high 11 rebounds. Ashley Kalauli and
Kozy Toriano combined to lead the team with 14 and 13
points respectively.
Kanisha Bello and Kozy
Toriano were named to the All-Tournament team. Tabitha
Eseroma, who was dominant in the middle throughout the
Tournament averaging 17 points a game, was named the
Most Outstanding Player.
Congratulations to the
Kamehameha-Hawaii Lady Warriors, the 2007 Division II
State Champions!
