Christian Hernandez may be a little guy, but his big game performance led Farrington to a 70-68 overtime victory over Aiea in the boys division two state basketball championship game at NBC Arena.

Hernandez scored 22 of his game high 27 points in the second half and overtime. His efforts included a 17-of-22 performance from the free throw line.

Leading 55-52 with 5.4 seconds remaining in regulation, Aiea had its leading scorer on the line to close out the win. Obie Woods missed his free throw attempt and Farrington rebounded with a quick outlet to Hernandez. Racing up the court and through a traffic jam of players from both team, Hernandez launched his running prayer from the left wing and it connected at the buzzer to tie the game at 55-55 and force overtime.

Woods nearly pulled off winning the state title for Na Ali`i. Woods carried the scoring load for most of the game with a team high 26 points.

Josh Chung also added 17 points (10-of-14 from the free throw line).

Both teams struggled from the field (Farrington 4-18, Aiea 7-23) in the first half as Na Ali`i led 20-17. The field goal percentage improved in the second half and so did the scoring output for both teams, except from the free throw line.

The Govs (17-3) failed to convert on its free throw opportunities (16-of-25) to build upon a lead in the second half. Aiea (17-1) could not seal the win
(9-of-15) down the stretch from the free throw line.

The game featured 16 ties and 15 lead changes. Aiea led 11-2 early in the first quarter for its biggest lead, while the Governors managed a three point margin late in the third quarter.

A total of 57 fouls were called and 82 free throws were attempted. Four players, two from each side, fouled out during the game.

Both teams normally substitute quite often in their respective games. The Aiea bench outscored (10-8) and outrebounded (8-6) the Farrington bench.
However, the Govs reserves handled the ball better with just two turnovers, compared to the six miscues by the Aiea reserves.

It was the first time since January 2007 (Kaiser defeated Aiea at Aiea High
School) that Aiea lost to an OIA White Division opponent, snapping a winning streak of nearly 30 games.

Aiea had defeated Farrington (regular season at Farrington High School and OIA Championship at McKinley High School) in its two previous meetings.
