Kahuku no sure thing in tournament
By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin
Feb. 24, 2009
One of the smaller schools in the Oahu Interscholastic Association has a big appetite for championships.
Kahuku’s move from Division I to Division II caught plenty of fans, coaches and players by surprise. There’s no surprise, though, that the Red Raiders are the top seed in the D-II portion of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships, which tips off today.
For most of the season, Kahuku was outranked in the Star-Bulletin Top 10 by only one other OIA team: Farrington. Despite a roving lineup hit by the occasional absence of club volleyball players on tournament trips, Kahuku went 20-2 while employing a frenzied pace reminiscent of the Showtime Lakers.
Kahuku, though, is no easy favorite. One of its nonconference losses came against Sacred Hearts, which was a top-10 team in early January. Sacred Hearts, which is in D-I, has similar peers in the state D-II field.

Punahou, Kahuku awarded top seeds
Honolulu Advertiser Staff
Feb. 23, 2009
Punahou and Kahuku earned the No. 1 seeds for this week’s Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai’i High School Athletic Association Girls Basketball State Championships.
Defending champion Punahou is the top seed in the Division I bracket. The Buffanblu (11-1), the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champions, receive a first-round bye and face the winner of tomorrow’s Kalani-‘Aiea game in Wednesday’s quarterfinals at Farrington.
Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Konawaena (12-0) is seeded second, followed by O’ahu Interscholastic Association champion Farrington (18-1) and Maui Interscholastic League champion Lahainaluna (14-0).
First-round games begin tomorrow at Farrington and Kaimuki. The championship game is Friday at 7 p.m. at the Blaisdell Arena.
Kahuku, the OIA White champion, is the No. 1 seed in Division II. The Red Raiders (14-1) receive a first-round bye and face the winner of tomorrow’s Kapa’a-St. Andrew’s game in Wednesday’s quarterfinals at Kalani.
