PEARL CITY WINS THE OIA BASEBALL TITLE

Chargers head coach Mel
Seki said that he was happy to just have his team make
the playoffs.  Tonight he is overcome with joy as his
Pearl City team defeated the #1 East seed Kailua
Surfriders 11-1 to claim their first OIA Baseball
Championship since 1999.   The chargers were the West #3
seed and will now get a top seed in next weekâ??s HHSAA
Wally Yonamine Foundation State Tournament and the 1st
round bye that usually comes with it.

Central Oahu Regional
Park provided the perfect setting for junior pitcher
Bryson Nakamura to pitch one of his best games of the
year, scattering 4 hits, walking only 3, and 4
strikeouts.  The last strikeout ended the game in the
bottom of the 5th due to the 10-run rule.
Nakamura was also 2-4 at the plate and won Most Valuable
Player honors.

The big inning for Pearl
City was the 2nd as 12 batters came to the
plate and 8 runs were scored.  The Surfriders used 4
pitchers in that inning.  â??I was surprised (at the early
scoring), yet not surprised considering the way has been
playing and hitting the ball.â?  said Seki who had a
perpetual smile on his face.

Kailua coach Corey Ishigo
had a very simple goal for tonight.  â??We need to just
get out of the innings. he said, knowing that his
pitching staff was very thin after using 5 pitchers,
including ace starters Preston Nakata and Kili Vierra in
their semi-final win over Mililani.  Starter Jared
Tamanaha was one of 5 pitchers used on the night.  Zach
Akamine was the most efficient Surfrider pitcher,
lasting 2 2/3 innings

The leading hitter for
Pearl City was Jordan Casarez who went 3-3 at the plate
and scored a run.

Congratulations to the
Pearly City Chargers, the 2007 OIA Baseball champions
for 2007!

Closing Time

Closing Time

2007 Regular season coming to the end.

By Alan Linsky –
www.coach.photos.com

On May 4, 2007,
the ILH held it’s last varsity meet of the regular
season. Next week will be the ILH Championships on this
same Kamehameha track. The weather cooperated with some
of the best conditions of the spring. It was partly
sunny with a light breeze, not too hot for the athletes.
This was the last chance to get a State qualifying time,
distance or height and the participants responded with
quite a few new qualifiers.

SUSPENDED!

And then there was…..darkness!

The top-ranked Punahou Buffanblue and the powerful
Kamehameha Warriors went eight incredible innings Wednesday afternoon and
evening, but settled absolutely nothing in their ILH tournament baseball
game.  After Kamehameha took a 7-6 lead in the top of the 8th inning on a
perfect squeeze bunt by Ashkon Kuhaulua, Punahou tied it in dramatic fashion
in the bottom of the 8th with a home run by junior pitching ace Paul Snieder to knot
the game at 7-7.

As darkness loomed, the umpires immediately suspended
the contest.  It will be re-started in the top of the 9th inning on Thursday
afternoon at Ala Wai Field.  The ultimate winner will have little time to
celebrate, as they will have to jump on a bus and quickly head to
Mid-Pacific to take on Iolani in the next round of the double elimination
tourney.  The loser will get some relief as they get to stay at the Ala Wai
where they will play St. Louis immediately after the completion of the
suspended game.

The game Wednesday was what you would expect from the
intense and competitive ILH.  It was well-played, well-pitched, with
dramatic moments throughout.

Kamahemeha jumped in front in the first on an rbi single
by Kuhaulua driving home Waylen Sing Chow.  Punahou quickly came back with
doubles by Matt Suiter and Josh Bninski, followed by a monstrous two-run
home run by Snieder, his first of two in the game.

The Warriors then rallied to tie it in the top of the
2nd inning at 3-3.  Parker McCready, who belted out three straight hits, led
off with a single, and was followed by run-scoring singles from Kapena
Kalehuawehe-Gomes and Sing Chow.

Kamehameha then took a 4-3 lead an inning later when
McCready doubled, and Lane Nakamura and Piikea Kitmura singled.  Punahou
quickly tied it when the Warriors committed three errors in the bottom half
of the 3rd to make the score 4-4.

In the fourth, Kamehameha once again took the lead with
Mitchell Kauweloa joining McCready with big hits and a 6-4 lead.  After
that, starting pitchers Sing Chow of Kamehameha and Jeeter Ishida of Punahou
settled down, making some big pitches along the way.

In the Punahou fifth, Bninski homered to straight away
centerfield, one of three Buffanblue homers to centerfield.  Then, in the
6th, they tied it at 6-6 with Jordan Honjiyo scoring on an infield single by
Shane Yoshiyama.

That set the stage for extra innings and the darkening
drama of the 8th inning.  The Warriors got things rolling in the top half
when Sing Chow doubled deep to leftfield, then moved to third on a bad-hop
infield single.  Kuhaulua put down a perfectly-placed squeeze bunt and Sing
Chow slid across home plate with the go-ahead run.

But the Warriors weren’t able to celebrate long.  In
the bottom half of the inning, Snieder hit a rocket of a drive to
straightaway centerfield that sent the Kamehameha centerfielder crashing
through the make-shift fence.  The dramatic solo homer tied the game at 7-7
and set up the perplexing scheduling problem for Thursday.

Bottom line–it’s ILH tournament time.  You should
expect a little drama.  Or in cases like this, some very big drama.  The ILH
gets only one representative to the state tournament this year, so a lot is
riding on this.  Punahou is the regular season champ.  If they win the
tournament, then they earn the automatic bid.  But if another team wins,
that sets up a winner take all one-game playoff.

Got it figured?  If you do, consider yourself one of
the smartest people on the island, and a real big baseball fan!

STILL NUMBER ONE!

STILL NUMBER ONE!

May 3,2007

For the fourth time this season, the top-ranked and
three-time defending state champion Punahou Buffanblue defeated the
second-ranked Iolani Raiders, but this was probably the biggest win of
them all.

Punahou downed Iolani, 6-3 Wednesday afternoon at
Ala Wai Field, claiming the ILH tournament title and the league’s lone
berth in the state baseball championships that begin next week.  Punahou
improved its record to 16-1, it’s only loss of the year coming against
Iolani earlier in the tournament.  The Raiders finished the season at
12-5, all but one of those losses coming at the hands of the
Buffanblue.

Punahou took advantage of two Iolani errors to
score twice in the top of the first inning against Iolani starter J.R.
Bunda.  Zach Kometani singled and scored on a three-base error to start
the scoring.  Then Paul Snieder doubled and scored on another error to
give the Buffanblue a 2-0 lead.

That lead stood up for four innings as Bunda and
Punahou starter Snieder locked up in a tight pitcher’s duel.
TheBuffanblue finally struck again in the top of the fifth when Bunda
gave up a one-out walk and was relieved by Jon Okada.  A hit batsman and
a two-out double to left by Jeeter Ishida pushed across two more runs
and Punahou led 4-0.

Iolani countered in the bottom half of the fifth as
Darren Sonobe singled and later scored on a throwing error.  In the
sixth, the Raiders mounted a big rally with a double from Brennan
Nacario, a single by Lionel Fujioka, a sacrifice by Kela Marciel, an rbi
grounder by Daniel Takami and a run-scoring single by Grant Liu.  That
tightened the intensity of the contest and made the score 4-3 going into
the final inning.

But Punahou came through like a champion.  They
added insurance in the top of the seventh against two more Iolani
relievers.  Zach Kometani’s single was followed by a walk, an error, a
hit batsman, and a bunt single to give the defending champs a 6-3 lead.

Snieder, who scattered eight hits over six innings,
was relieved in the bottom of the seventh by Ishida, last year’s
pitcher-of-the-year.  Ishida gave up a double to Jarrett Arakawa, but he
came back to strike out the last batter of the game to seal the title
for Punahou.

The Buffanblue will almost assuredly earn the
top-seed in the HHSAA state tournament that begins next Wednesday at Les
Murakami Stadium.  For Iolani, they have the consolation that they made
their arch-rivals earn every single one of their victories this season.

Five times this baseball season, it was a rivalry
to remember.
