HHSAA Division I FOOTBALL: Cameron Mercado Kicks Kahuku into State Title Game
By Kyle Galdeira

Kahuku is headed back to the state championship game for the first time since winning the state title in 2006 after eking out a 9-6 overtime victory over Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East rival Farrington in the semifinal round of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships tonight at Aloha Stadium.

The top-seeded Red Raiders (12-0) scored all their points on three field goals by kicker Cameron Mercado, including a 49-yard blast to end the first half. Kahuku, the OIA champion, advances to face the winner of the other semifinal contest pitting Kamehameha against Leilehua.

Farrington (9-3) received a game-high 185 yards rushing from senior running back Harry Tuimaseve. The back averaged 6.4 yards-per-rush on the evening and scored the team’s lone touchdown.

The contest featured two run-oriented offenses jockeying for field position. Both defensive units reigned supreme in the opening period as the two squads combined for just one first down and six passing yards.

HHSAA Division I FOOTBALL: Kamehameha Sacks Leilehua, Advances to State Title Game

By Kyle Galdeira
www.SportsHigh.com

The Kamehameha defense racked up seven sacks en route to a 40-0 shutout of Leilehua in the semifinal round of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships tonight at Aloha Stadium.

The second-seeded Warriors (11-1) racked up 506 yards of offense while the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion limited Leilehua (9-4), the Oahu Interscholastic Association runner-up, to just 89 yards. Kamehameha quarterback T.C. Campbell threw for 217 yards and two touchdowns while running back Ryan Ho rushed for 107 yards on 15 carries and a score. Fellow running back Kupono Park also added two touchdowns on the ground in the decisive victory.

The Warriors marched down the field on the game’s opening drive, traveling 65 yards on five plays in a mere 52 seconds. Park’s 15-yard run capped the drive, and provided Kamehameha with a quick 7-0 advantage.

The Leilehua defense forced two Warrior fumbles in the first quarter to thwart a pair of promising scoring drives. Despite being out-gained 116 yards to 27 in the opening period, the Mules remained within a score of tying the game.

Aiea edges Lahainaluna to earn a date with ‘Iolani

By Chuck Cordill / Special to the Star-Bulletin

Eric Badoyen blocked an extra-point attempt late in the fourth quarter to preserve the lead, and Anae Vaa added the exclamation point with a 43-yard touchdown run from scrimmage in the final 30 seconds as Aiea beat Lahainaluna 20-12 last night at Aiea High School field in a first-round game of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division II State Football Championships.

With the victory, Na Alii (9-3) advanced to play top seed ‘Iolani on Friday at Radford.

Lahainaluna, the MIL Division II champion, finished the season with a 6-4 record.

Aiea came into the game with a more pass-oriented offense. When Chucky Kaahanui started at quarterback, it seemed Na Alii planned to counter the Luna run with their own rushing attack. The plan worked just enough to win. Both teams were plagued with drive-stymieing penalties and miscues, but when it all came down to it, Aiea managed to keep the ball longer in a tight defensive battle.

“We played each other pretty close, but Aiea kept our defense on the field too long,” said Lahainaluna co-head coach Robert Watson. “We laid it all out and played tough, but they are a big, physical team and it showed in the fourth quarter.”

Aiea head coach Wendell Say started Kaahanui as quarterback to give the offense a spark and take advantage of his running ability. The 5-foot-10 junior rushed for 67 hard-fought yards on 12 carries, but also showed he had arm strength. He finished the game completing 11 of 21 passes for 68 yards, but threw several bullets that came inches from boosting the yardage total substantially.

“When Freddy Tailiula went down for a few games this season, Chucky answered the call,” said Say. “He passed for something like 600 yards in the three games he played, but tonight you saw that he hasn’t played the position for a while and he was a little off on his timing.”

Although Lahainaluna was seeded fourth, the Lunas had to travel to Oahu because MIL Division I champion Baldwin had dibs on War Memorial Stadium for its game with Leilehua. The Lunas didn’t make travel an issue.

“We did it to ourselves by not winning the Kauai and Maui High games earlier,” said co-head coach Garret Tihada prior to the game. “We’re happy we got a four seed.”

Na Alii won the inaugural Division II championship with a victory over Damien in 2003 but have yet to return to the tourney final. The Lunas fell to ‘Iolani in the 2007 championship game and made it as far as the semifinal round in 2008.

Lahainaluna scored first, taking advantage midway through the first quarter off a bad snap fumbled by Kaahanui and recovered at the Aiea 29. The Lunas drove to the 1 and finally broke the goal line on fourth down. The PAT drifted wide right. Na Alii answered at the 5:35 mark in the second quarter when Kaahanui kept the ball and scampered 32 yards for the score to take a 7-6 lead.

Preps chief Amemiya stepping down

Preps chief Amemiya stepping down

By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

Keith Amemiya, the highly innovative head of high school sports in Hawaii the past 11 years, plans to resign from his post, the Star-Bulletin has learned. His resignation as executive director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association would take place at the end of this school year, sources confirmed.

Amemiya declined comment.

His name surfaced earlier this year as a potential candidate for lieutenant governor, but he said last month he had no plans to run.

According to a source, Amemiya wanted to step down last year, but stayed on to organize a major fundraising effort to alleviate public school sports budget problems.

For more than a decade, Amemiya, an attorney by trade, has brought new ideas and expanded the reach of high school athletics in Hawaii.

Under his watch, the HHSAA provided the spark to move athletics into a new age. From the creation of Division II at the state-tournament level to the Save Our Sports fund managed by the HHSAA — Amemiya’s ties to the business community have generated more than $1.3 million in donations since July — the highlights have been monumental

Farrington finds a way

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Farrington finds a way

By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

Harry Tuimaseve rushed for 178 yards on a season-high 36 carries to power Farrington, which did not complete a pass in five attempts.

Castle (6-5) closed the season with an iron-man performance from several two-way starters, including Kehano, who had 11 receptions for 150 yards. The senior scored on two touchdown passes and a 72-yard punt return, the latter bringing Castle within 28-20 with 2:20 left in the third quarter.

Farrington, which outlasted Castle 19-8 in early September, punted on its next two possessions before Faamausili had tight coverage on Kehano’s out route. The senior’s pick and return, with a vault over a tackler at the goal line, was a backbreaker that gave Farrington a 35-20 lead with 1:15 to play.

“That interception just broke the game wide open,” Castle coach Nelson Maeda said. “The pass was a little late.”

Farrington’s pass rush did the rest, with five sacks: two by V.J. Fehoko, and one each by Seth Ilae, Keith Chargualaf-Tuillapea and Justin Vele. Moments later, Shane Dsio stripped the ball away on Castle’s kick return and ran 27 yards for a touchdown.

Video: Kahuku’s D-line loves to pressure

Kahuku’s D-line loves to pressure

By Kalani Takase
Honolulu Advertiser

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: HawaiiDigitalSports.com Click on link’s in article

Kahuku football coach Reggie Torres is a man with high expectations. But that hasn’t been a problem for a trio of Red Raiders’ defensive linemen.

Ends Hauoli Jamora and Kona Schwenke and nose tackle Veteson Sauni — all seniors — wreaked havoc against Leilehua quarterback Andrew Manley on Friday night to lead Kahuku to its second consecutive O’ahu Interscholastic Association title and 21st overall.

“Coming back from last year, we knew that our strength would be our defensive line,” Torres said. “They were supposed to help solidify the defense while the linebackers and secondary came around and they’ve done that job.”

Jamora — who had five sacks of Manley — and Sauni, combined for seven sacks. Jamora, who is 6 foot 2, 235 pounds, also had five sacks in a semifinal win over Castle two weeks ago.

“He’s been the same way all year,” Torres said of Jamora, a two-sport standout. “He works his tail off in the weight room and on the field, he’s just relentless at practice.”

Jamora is the reigning OIA judo champion at 220 pounds, but Torres said that Schwenke, who stands 6 foot 3 and weighs 215 pounds, may be the most gifted of the group.

“Oh yeah, of all the three linemen, he’s the athlete,” Torres said of Schwenke, who is a post player on the Red Raiders’ basketball team. “He’s got that grace and mobility to him.”

Sauni, at 6 foot and 250 pounds, has been a steady run-stuffer in the middle, forcing offenses to run the ball outside, where Jamora and Schwenke have prospered.

“He mandates double teams, which gives one-on-ones for Hauoli and Kona,” Torres said of Sauni, who is on the wrestling team.

Against the Mules, Jamora forced a fumble by Manley on a sack in the first quarter and Schwenke recovered it. Kahuku recycled the turnover into a 5-yard Viliami Pasi touchdown run to go ahead, 10-0.

After Leilehua scored the next 20 points to seize the lead, Jamora turned the tide in the early part of the fourth quarter with his fumble recovery in the end zone off a blocked punt by teammate Johnny Tupuola to pull the Red Raiders to within a field goal.

“We were down by two scores and we had a long drive, got into scoring position and fumbled the ball away,” Torres said. “Our kids were down and frustrated, but that play brought us back to (within) a score, gave us some big momentum and took away from the fact that we fumbled the ball away on that drive.”

Kahuku rallies late to topple Leilehua, 24-20

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

Hauoli Jamora achieved a lineman’s dream by scoring a touchdown, but he’ll take the five sacks that helped top-ranked Kahuku rally past No. 3 Leilehua 24-20 last night at Aloha Stadium to win its second consecutive and 14th O’ahu Interscholastic Association football title since 1970.

Punga Vea’s 44-yard touchdown run on an end reverse with five minutes, six seconds left in the game was the second of two fourth-quarter TDs to help the Red Raiders come back from a 20-10 deficit after three quarters.

Kahuku (11-0) draws a first-round state Division I tournament bye and plays in one semifinal Nov. 27 at Aloha Stadium.

Leilehua (8-3) will play Maui Interscholastic League champion Baldwin, at 6 p.m. Nov. 20 at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku. The game will be aired live by OC 16.

Last night’s game was delayed about 15 minutes with 7:35 left in the game when Leilehua’s leading receiver, Kamana Akagi, was taken to the hospital by ambulance after a collision with a Kahuku player on an incomplete pass. Akagi raised his right arm as he was being lifted into the ambulance, apparently trying to show everyone he was OK. Leilehua athletic director Jimmy Toyota said Akagi was unconscious for a while, but was optimistic the injury wasn’t too serious.

“It was hard because Mana’s one of our main receivers and we just love’em as a brother,” Leilehua senior QB Andrew Manley said. “So seeing him leave like that just hurt all of us. We knew we had to pick it up. We wanted to try to play for him, but the ball happened to go their way and they came out with a win. They’re a great team.”

Kahuku’s Jamora, who switches from 52 to jersey No. 97 when he plays offense, landed on the loose ball after Johnny Tupuola blocked Fred Patrones’ punt in the end zone that pulled Kahuku to 20-17 with 8:30 left in the game.

But it was his relentless pass rushing that had Manley under pressure most of the time.

“I think the sacks (were more satisfying) because the touchdown was kind of given,” Jamora said. “The ball was just there.”

The Mules trailed 10-0 after the first quarter before Manley’s two second-quarter TD passes put them ahead, 13-10 at the half.

Kahuku scored on its first series after Leilehua only managed a 16-yard punt to the Mules’ 34. But Leilehua’s defense stiffened enough to allow Kahuku to settle on a 42-yard field goal by Cameron Mercado with 7:05 left in the first quarter.

A sack by Jamora on Manley forced a fumble that Kona Schwenke recovered at the Mules’ 44. Tailback Viliami Pasi scored from 5 yards out with no time left on the clock to end the first quarter. Mercado’s PAT made it 10-0.

The Mules finally got on the board in the second quarter. Manley dropped a rainbow pass to Darrien Shealy for a 31-yard TD, but Timothy Momiyama missed his PAT to keep it 10-6 with 4:58 left in the half.

The Mules later scored on Manley’s 10-yard fade pass to Akagi. Momiyama’s PAT made it 13-10 at the half.

The Mules increased their lead in the third quarter when a low snap from center in punt formation delayed the punter enough to have his punt blocked and downed at the Kahuku 28. Four plays later, Manley hit Shealy on a 17-yard TD pass to make it 20-10.

Kahuku pulled to 20-17 with 8:30 left in the fourth quarter when Tupuola blocked a punt that was recovered by Jamora in the end zone.

Kahuku took the lead after punter Fred Padrones came up two yards shy on a fake punt, giving the Red Raiders the ball at the Mules’ 48. Vea scored on an end reverse on a 44-yard run to give Kahuku a 24-20 lead with 5:06 left.

Kahuku rallies for the Red

By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

Kahuku’s cardiac kids did it again.

The Red Raiders came up with a gadget play — a reverse toss to wide receiver Punga Vea — that turned into a 44-yard touchdown with 5:06 left for a heart-stopping 24-20 win over Leilehua for the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference championship.

It’s their second OIA Red title in a row and sixth in the past seven years, and again, the heart of the crown came from Kahuku’s defense. Hauoli Jamora was a huge factor with five of his team’s eight sacks. The Red Raiders limited Leilehua’s Andrew Manley to 245 passing yards (23-for-35).

“We know he’s accurate, so we tried to bring the pressure,” Jamora said. His partners in the trenches, Kona Schwenke and Veteson Sauni, combined for three sacks.

Top-ranked Kahuku (11-0) will have an opening-round bye in the state tournament, which kicks off in two weeks. Leilehua (7-3), ranked No. 3 in the state, will travel and play Baldwin in two weeks.

“We’ll take it as another game. Tomorrow, we’ll come back and fix our mistakes,” Manley said. “Our prayers and wishes are with Mana.”

Leilehua receiver Kamana Akagi suffered a serious injury in the fourth quarter and was transported to a hospital.

After taking the lead in the late going, the Red Raiders withstood two possessions by Leilehua. Kahuku stopped the Mules on downs at mid-field with 2:15 left, and again after Leilehua gained possession at its 20-yard line with 44 seconds remaining.

The Mules tried a last-ditch double pass from their end zone as time expired, and Manley’s pass found Kyle Cruse Gombio at midfield, but he was stopped at the 40-yard line to end the game.

The first half was prime-time quality viewing for a statewide TV audience. Kahuku’s hard-hitting defense sacked Manley four times before halftime — two each by Jamora and Schwenke — only to find the resilient Mules field general rallying his team from behind.

Kahuku came out strong offensively, getting a 42-yard field goal from Cameron Mercado (five kickoffs for touchbacks) and a 5-yard touchdown run by Viliami Pasi on the final play of the first quarter for a 10-0 lead. Pasi’s touchdown was set up by a big hit by Jamora on Manley, and Schwenke recovered at the Leilehua 44-yard line to set up the drive.

Leilehua came up empty on its first three possessions, but drove 72 yards in nine plays to get on the scoreboard. Manley connected on key passes to Carlos Marshall (third and 15) and Darrien Shealy (third and 10) before finding Shealy for a 31-yard touchdown pass. Manley scrambled right and got the pass off to his wide-open target a second before Schwenke closed in, and the Mules were within 10-6 with 4:58 to go in the first half.

Kahuku defensive back Johnny Tupola’s interception off a tipped pass gave the Red Raiders first down at the Leilehua 46-yard line with 1:47 left, but Evan Moe hurled an interception five plays later. Leilehua linebacker Stockton Crowley, standing in the flat, returned the ball 60 yards to the Kahuku 10-yard line.

On the next play, Manley found Akagi one-on-one in a post-corner route and hit a perfect strike for another Leilehua touchdown. The Mules led 13-10 with 43 seconds to go in the half.

Kahuku’s special teams were flawless until a breakdown midway through the third quarter gave Leilehua a huge break. A punt snap bounced to Mercado, whose punt attempt was blocked and sailed out of bounds at the 28-yard line.

With their best starting field position of the night, the Mules needed just four plays to hit paydirt, even after a sack by Sauni. Manley’s bullet to Shealy, which was tipped, on the left sideline barely got past the defensive back. Tupola gambled on the pass and missed. Shealy’s 17-yard touchdown play pushed Leilehua’s lead to 20-10 with 1:18 left in the third quarter.

The Red Raiders patiently drove deep into Leilehua territory on the ensuing possession, but Moe lost the ball on an option keeper at the Mules’ 6-yard line. The hit by Crowley led to a fumble recovery by linebacker Darric Matsumiya, and the Mules averted the threat temporarily.

Kahuku came through four plays later when Tupola blocked Fred Padrones’ punt in the end zone and Jamora recovered the bouncing football for a touchdown. Kahuku trailed 20-17 with 8:30 remaining.

The game was halted a minute later when Akagi suffered an injury on an incomplete pass. The senior receiver remained almost motionless for several minutes before moving his legs, and was transported to a hospital. As Leilehua fans chanted his name, Akagi managed to point upward with his left index finger while paramedics wheeled him on a stretcher into the ambulance.
