Defensive stars Jamora, Yap join Manley as elite of 2009

The Honolulu Advertiser All-State football teams

It took a Defensive Player of the Year performance to stop the Offensive Player of the Year.

Actually, it took two.

In a football season featuring a deep crop of defensive linemen, Kahuku’s Hauoli Jamora and Kamehameha’s Beau Yap were selected Defensive Co-Players of the Year on the 2009 Honolulu Advertiser All-State Division I team.

Leilehua’s Andrew Manley closes his storybook career as the Offensive Player of the Year.

The Players of the Year were selected by a cross-section of Division I coaches; the rest of the selections were based on consultations with coaches, media and independent sources who followed the game, but are not affiliated with any of the programs.

Manley, who shared the top offensive player honor as a junior with Punahou’s all-purpose selection Robert Toma in 2008, narrowly edged Kamehameha’s sparkplug running back Ryan Ho for this year’s honor. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior led all Division I passers with 3,108 yards. He completed 245 of 402 passes with 27 touchdowns against 11 interceptions.

Manley concluded a dream career in which he led the Mules to a 25-7 record, including 12-4 in postseason. Manley guided Leilehua to three consecutive state tournaments, reaching the finals twice. He helped the Mules capture the 2007 state title after being promoted from the JV during the O’ahu Interscholastic Association playoffs.

“Without Manley, (the Mules) are not the same team,” Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said. “He’s the guy that makes that team go. He’s a big-time player. You could put him on any team and he would make them better.”

Manley, who has verbally committed to New Mexico State, finished his career with 7,641 passing yards and 66 touchdowns.

Ho, who carried Kamehameha’s offense until quarterback T.C. Campbell got a grip on the system, got incredible mileage out of his 5-foot-6, 175-pound frame. He rushed for 1,515 yards and 20 TDs, averaging 6.6 yards per carry.

Journey fulfills Jamora

2009 ALL-STATE FOOTBALL TEAM | DEFENSE
Journey fulfills Jamora

The defensive end’s path to Kahuku concludes with the player of the year honor

By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

On the outside, he was a self-described “fat boy” whose mother wouldn’t let him play Pop Warner football.

Inside? Hauoli Jamora grew up watching Kahuku football, vowing one day to play for the Red Raiders.

But the optimistic kid found himself relocating from Hauula to California. After moving back to Oahu — “I was begging my mom about Kahuku,” he said — they returned to Hauula for a short time.

Then came a move to Pearl City, and Jamora’s dream wouldn’t die. In fact, he spent his sophomore year catching the bus from Pearl City to Kahuku, getting to the bus stop at 5 a.m., transferring in Haleiwa and arriving at school after 7. Then came wrestling practices after school, then another long haul back to Pearl City.

Jamora hadn’t even played a down of football for Kahuku, but he was content. Within two years, Jamora transformed into one of the state’s top recruits.

His eye-popping performances wowed coaches and media, who in turn voted Jamora the Star-Bulletin defensive player of the year.

Kahuku’s defense was particularly effective, a 3-4 system that put Jamora’s strength and quickness to good use. Whether it was long fumble returns for touchdowns or blocked punts in the end zone, Jamora’s motor never slowed.

West wins Hawaii Goodwill Senior Bowl, Mainland wins Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl

HONOLULU , HI – December 12, 2009 – Hawaii prep football fans turned out in the thousands to watch the best of the best high school senior football players from Hawaii and the Continental United States compete in the second annual Aloha Prep Bowl, presented by the Hawaii Army National Guard, on Saturday, December 12 at Aloha Stadium. The Aloha Prep Bowl is produced by Football University (FBU), an invitation-only camp for elite-level youth and prep players, in conjunction with the Hawaii Union Builders (HUB) Foundation. Proceeds from the Aloha Prep Bowl go to the HUB Foundation, which provides scholarships to Hawaii college-bound student athletes.

The Aloha Prep Bowl highlighted 130 Hawaii players in the exciting double header. The first game, the 19th annual Hawaii Goodwill Senior Bowl was an East Oahu vs. West Oahu challenge that had players from both OIA and ILH high schools. The second game, the 2nd annual Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl features Hawaii and Mainland all-stars.

“We are very pleased that so many people came out to support these young men who were chosen to play in the Aloha Prep Bowl,” said Wayne Chun, Co-Chariman of the HUB Foundation. “The HUB Foundation created the Hawaii Goodwill Senior Bowl years ago to showcase Oahu’s football talent and to raise funds for local schools and scholarships for college-bound athletes. This double header continues this mission.” Since its inception, the HUB Foundation has raised over $100,000 for schools and scholarships.

Football University (owned by SportsLink, the creators of the U.S. Army Bowl on NBC) President Rich McGuinness added, “Hawaii is definitely a hotbed for gridiron talent and we are pleased to be involved with this great event.” The Aloha Prep Bowl has proven to open the eyes of college recruiters for many high school seniors who have gone unnoticed in the regular season.

Helping make this bowl a reality is the Aloha Prep Bowl local Hawaii sponsors, including: presenting sponsor, Hawaii Army National Guard; OC16; Dixie Grill; Starcomm Sports Radio; Hawaii Digital Sports; Honolulu Star-Bulletin/MidWeek; Ward Pet Spot; Pacific Administrators, Inc.; The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1186; Bank of Hawaii; Hawaii Self Storage; Seven-Eleven Hawaii, Pasha Hawaii Transport Lines; McDonald’s Hawaii; Lemke, Chinen and Tanaka, CPA, Inc., and Ironworkers Union Local 625.

HAWAII/POLYNESIA-MAINLAND BOWL HIGHLIGHTS – By ScoringLive

Some of the best high school football players in the nation showcased their skills in the 2nd annual Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl, and in the end the Mainland All-Stars were victorious over the Hawaii All-Stars, 26-6.

The Mainland’s Duece **** (Redemporist High School, LA) caught touchdown passes, one from each of three Mainland quarterbacks, to lead the Mainland squad to its victory over Hawaii/Polynesia. Lache Seastrunk (Temple High School, TX) had a game-high 16 carries for 142 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown scamper down the right sideline late in the 4th quarter to put the game out of reach.

Hawaii Team’s London Amorin (Pac-Five) led the Hawaii/Polynesia squad with 2 catches for 100 yards, with 92 of those yards coming from a pass play from quarterback PJ Minaya (Pac-Five) on Hawaii/Polynesia’s first play from scrimmage. Kicker Cameron Mercado (Kahuku High School) accounted for all of the Hawaii/Polynesia points, connecting on field goals of 25 and 27 yards.

MVP honors for the Mainland Team went to Defensive Lineman Ricky Heimuli (Brighton High School, UT). Wide Receiver Duece **** (Redemporist High School, LA), received the MVP trophy for the Hawaii Team.

Mainland wins again

By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

For three quarters, the best of Hawaii and Polynesia kept the nation’s No. 1 running back under check.

Unfortunately, while Lache Seastrunk took awhile to find paydirt, teammate Deuce **** had no trouble, catching three touchdown passes as the Mainland All-Stars pulled away from Hawaii/Polynesia for a 26-6 win Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.

It was the second victory in as many tries for the visitors in two years. This time, Hawaii/Poly fared well against some of the nation’s top players, trailing 7-6 early in the second half before succumbing.

Seastrunk’s 60-yard gallop down the sideline — which put him over the 100-yard mark — opened a three-touchdown lead in the final quarter. Until then, it was a relative defensive stalemate between a physical Hawaii/Poly defense and an utterly stingy Mainland defense. The home team mustered just two field goals by Cameron Mercado and the defense eventually wore down.

The Mainlanders accumulated six sacks, including two by Lynden Trail (Booker T. Washington High School, Florida), and picked off three passes. Offensively, **** (Redemporist High School, Louisiana) had six receptions for 80 yards, including three touchdowns, working the middle of the field expertly.

Kamehameha steps up

The Warriors race out to a big lead, then pull away after a Kahuku rally for their first state title in five years

By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

Kahuku was the top seed, but the Kamehameha Warriors were top flight.

The Warriors ruled the first half with a 20-point lead before fighting off the Red Raiders for a 34-21 win in the Division I final of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships last night before 22,661 at Aloha Stadium.

Kamehameha won its first state crown since 2004 by using a dominant defense and a balanced offense. The Warriors also got the edge in the kicking game by blocking a Kahuku punt.

Kahuku’s dynamic kicker, Cameron Mercado, delivered two kickoffs for touchbacks but never materialized as a key weapon late in the game as the Red Raiders lost for the first time after 12 wins.

Second-seeded Kamehameha (12-1), the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, relied on a consistent, smart offensive line and running back Ryan Ho (121 yards on 24 carries). Quarterback T.C. Campbell was sharp for most of the game, throwing for 183 yards (15-for-25) and three touchdowns. He tossed two picks, though one was on a bomb in the final seconds of the first half.

Kahuku’s offense came to life with a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter and it seemed another amazing comeback was in store. However, Kamehameha’s defense regrouped, and the Red Raiders gave up more points than they had in any of their previous games.

Kamehameha’s O-line defused Kahuku’s explosive tandem of Hauoli Jamora (one sack) and Kona Schwenke (none).

Aloha Prep Bowl to Show Hawaii’s and Mainland’s Best Prep Football Players

Aloha Prep Bowl to Show Hawaii’s and Mainland’s Best Prep Football Players

Bowl to be Prominently Featured in FOX Reality Show “The Ride”

HONOLULU , HI – November 17, 2009 – The best of the best senior high school football players from Hawaii, American Samoa and the Continental United States have been chosen for the second annual Aloha Prep Bowl, presented by the Hawaii Army National Guard, set to take place Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Hawaii’s Aloha Stadium.

FBU executives said the impetus was to showcase the great football talent and culture of Hawaii to other top prep athletes and sports fans across the nation. The Aloha Prep Bowl is a two-game showcase that features the Hawaii Goodwill Senior Bowl (4:00 PM HST) and the Hawaii/Polynesian-Mainland Bowl (7:00 PM HST). FBU is owned and operated by SportsLink.

“Hawaii has one of the best football cultures in the world, a true warrior mentality and continually produces top football talent. The state isn’t recognized like a Texas, California or Georgia, but deserves more of the spotlight,” said Rich McGuinness, president of FBU. “Hawaii is a hotbed for gridiron talent and we are pleased to be involved with an event that can create an opportunity for more Hawaii high school senior players to showcase their skills.”

The Aloha Prep Bowl will highlight 138 top Hawaii players. One hundred of the best Oahu players will play in the Hawaii Goodwill Bowl, now in its 19th year thanks to the HUB Foundation, in an East vs. West challenge. Forty of mainland U.S.A’s top prep football players will compete against a Hawaii team comprised of 38 players from across Hawaii, three players from American Samoa, and nine mainland players with ties to the Aloha State in the Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl. Rosters to be announced shortly.

The Mayor of Honolulu, Mufi Hanneman, was a leading advocate of bringing a national high school game to Honolulu last year, when it was known as the Hawaii All-Star Football Classic.

The Hawaii/Polynesia Mainland Bowl will be broadcast nationwide on FOX West Prime Ticket (blacked out in Hawaii) and in other select regions from around the country. The Hawaii Goodwill Senior Bowl will be broadcast live locally via OC16 pay-per-view. Both games will be on Starcomm Sports Radio (ESPN 1420), and via the internet by Hawaii Digital Sports at www.hawaiidigitalsports.com and by ScoringLive at www.ScoringLive.com.

Tickets are available now at the Aloha Stadium Box Office and at www.HawaiiAthletics.com. Ticket Pricing: General Admission $10, Premium Seating $20, and Free for children 5 and under.

Helping make this bowl a reality is the Aloha Prep Bowl local sponsors, including: presenting sponsor, Hawaii Army National Guard; OC16; Dixie Grill; Starcomm Sports Radio; Hawaii Digital Sports; Honolulu Star-Bulletin/MidWeek; Ward Pet Spot; Pacific Administrators, Inc.; The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1186; Bank of Hawaii; Hawaii Self Storage; Seven-Eleven Hawaii, Pasha Hawaii Transport Lines; McDonald’s Hawaii; Lemke, Chinen and Tanaka, CPA, Inc., and Ironworkers Union Local 625.

The Aloha Prep Bowl and the island of Oahu will be featured in the reality show, “The Ride.” “The Ride” is America’s newest sports reality show and will be on hand at the bowl to film for two episodes. The show, which airs on Fox Sports Net (Fox Sports Net West Prime Ticket in Hawaii) and Comcast SportsNet affiliates nationally, takes eight quarterbacks in a gradual elimination format and provides them with elite training from FBU’s NFL instructors. Two quarterbacks will advance to participate in the Aloha Prep Bowl with one vying for a chance at being named to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. These two players will be announced later.

Visiting the islands from January 22nd to the 24th will be FBU, the nation’s best football training experience. Modeled after an NFL mini-camp, FBU is an elite, invite-only football camp with NFL instructors like Andre Rison, Hawaii’s own Kurt Gouveia and top-notch NFL coaches who have trained the likes of Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Matt Ryan.

FBU and the return of the Aloha Prep Bowl signify the growth of the 50th state on the football field.
