In a rematch of last year’s OIA Championship Game, Pearl City was able to repeat and defend their title with an exciting 8-7 victory in a game at Central Oahu Regional Park that went 8 innings.  Sophmore pitcher Kahana Neal performed like Superman, going 7 1/3 innings and tossing over 130 pitches for the victory.

First year head coach Gary Nakamoto, who took over for retired Mel Seki, will lead the Chargers into next week’s HHSAA State Tournament with an expected top seed and a bye in the first round.  Pearl City becomes the first repeat champion of the OIA since Corey Ishigo’s Surfriders put together 4 consecutive titles from 2000-03.

The Surfriders will have to play in the first round of the State Tournament with seedings and pairings to be announced this weekend.

The 1st inning would dictate how the game would carry out the rest of the night.  Neal got tagged for 3 runs and many thought he would be pulled early.  But Coach Nakamoto stuck with him which turned out to be the decision of the night.  On the other side, Kailua starter Reyn Matsuki was relieved in the inning after giving up 2 runs.

One of the hits in that wild first inning was a 2-run homerun blast by Kailua’s Scotty Talaesea deep to left center field.

Going into the 6th inning, Kailua was in control with a 5-3 lead.  Charger Corey Yuh hit a 2-RBI single to tie the game.  Yuh went 3-4 at the plate.

In the 8th inning, Ryan Acosta got Pearl City going with a double.  Two batters later, Jordan Nagai brought Acosta home with a double of his own.  Yuh singled to bring home Nagai, then scored on an error.

Kailua would not go down so easily as they scored 2 runs.  Pinch hitter Jared Tamanaha singled in Ryan Kinoshita.  Then clean up hitter Keenan Tanaka singled in Tamanaha.  But relief pitcher Bryson Nakamura struckout the final batter to clinch the OIA Championship for Pearl City.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: 63rd Punahou Relays

April 26, 2008
From Alan Linsky for Hawaii Digital Sports

VIEW FULL PHOTO GALLERY FROM www.coach-photos.com

See video highlights and results below

Covering the ILH week in and week out it’s easy to forget that there are a lot of other schools out there with some very, very good talent. The Punahou Relays tend to attract this talent and it was evident on this hot, muggy, voggy day.

The Punahou Relay Meet is a two day affair with the trials held on Thursday and the finals on Saturday. The trials did not include any field events or the long distance relays.

Non-ILH schools I noticed were Waianae, Radford, Kapolei, Mililani, Kaiser, Roosevelt, Waipahu, King Kekaulike, Leilehua, Farrington, Kahuku, Kalani, Pearl City, St. Anthony, Aiea, Baldwin and Nanakuli. I hope I didn’t miss any!

Events won by the OIA include the boys 4×100 shuttle hurdle (Kapolei), boys 4×200 (Radford), girls sprint medley (King Kekaulike), boys 4×180 shuttle hurdles (Kapolei), girls and boys 4×100 (Radford), girls and boys 4×400 (Radford), boys high jump (Mililani), girls pole vault (Pearl City), girls long jump (Kalani), girls triple jump (Kahuku), boys triple jump (Roosevelt), girls discus (Leilehua), and boys discus (Aiea). What a wonderful showing and super warmup for what’s shaping up to be a very exciting State Championship in a few weeks!

This is not to say that the ILH didn’t manage a lot of wins. Punahou won 9 events, with Kamehameha winning 4. Iolani also had one win.

The outstanding meet athletes were Lahaina Zoller of Punahou and Christopher Rainey of Radford. Congratulations on some super performances!

The Hawaii Fastest Human was won by Joshua Villoria in a very fast time of 10.95.
