OFF THE BENCH – WOW – What A Week!
I’m exhausted. In case you are wondering, I’m referring to last week’s HHSAA State Basketball Tournaments. Let me emphasize the plural with a capitol “Sâ€, as in Boys and Girls Division I & II. Let’s look at the numbers shall we.
4 Tournaments
5 days
10 Sites
48 Teams
72 Games
….and a Partridge in a Pear Tree.
Now multiply that with the number of articles, photos, and videos we at Digital Sports Hawaii put out on our portal………we covered the Tournaments like the paparazzi on Brittney Spears. But we are way more professional.
The Oscars were this past Sunday (I think – I’m a sports fan so I didn’t watch it). So I would like to thank a few people:
The HHSAA – the folks who put everything together along with all their volunteers. After getting bumped from the Stan Sheriff Center for the Girls Championships which was originally scheduled the week before, they had to scramble to make all this happen on the same week.
The Officials – already stretched thin with the addition of the girl’s season to the Winter, these men and women turned into “Stretch Armstrong†and stretched even more to accommodate all the games. Keep in mind that many of these officials also officiate the NCAA D-II games for Chaminade, HPU, etc.
Coaches and Athletic Directors – the first year of both girls and boys seasons running concurrently is finished. They will meet to evaluate but the logistics of doing this on such short transition time (a few months) was done. Gym space, practice schedules, transportation funds, scheduling, personnel, etc. You guys made it happen.
Media – yes, we are included in this group. Yes – all media, which suddenly had double the amount of games to cover and report scores, stats, and interviews. But the same deadlines.
The Families of the Above – for not seeing us for the 5 days of the tournament.
Thank you.
And how was your week?

Coming from behind not once, but twice, Punahou pulled out a 41-38 win over Kamehameha Hawaii in the boys division one state basketball championship game at the NBC Arena.
The Buffanblu boys hoops squad gave an encore victory performance for those who missed the girls squad do the same just a night earlier over Iolani.
Kameron Steinhoff led Punahou with a team high 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Henry Cassidy (7 points) ignited the Punahou offense with four points in the final minute of the fourth quarter.
Hogan Rosehill scored a game high 20 points and collected 12 rebounds for the Warriors. Rosehill was unstoppable in the first quarter with eights points and seven rebounds but exited with 49 seconds remaining with two fouls.
Kamehameha Hawaii led 19-11 midway through the second quarter. Punahou responded with a 12-0 run to take a 23-19 lead at halftime.
Trailing 31-25 to Punahou in third quarter, the Warriors answered with a run of its own thanks to a couple of three point field goals from Rosehill to tie up the game 33-33 at the end of the third quarter.
Kamehameha Hawaii would reclaim the lead once again during the fourth quarter only to see the Buffanblu turn up the defensive pressure and transition its effort into a one point lead with a jumper by Henry Cassidy.
The Warriors took a timeout and trailing 39-38 with 38 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The Warriors decided to work its offense toward the right side with its leading scorer, Rosehill, on the wing. Unable to find an open look from behind the three point line, Rosehill attempted to pass the ball over the defense to the opposite side of court, but the ball sailed out of bounce for a turnover.
Now forced to foul to put Punahou on the free throw line, the Warriors committed three fouls over the next 20 seconds.
Punahou then discovered a breakdown on the weakside of the Warriors defense and converted on an easy scoring opportunity. Henry Cassidy’s lay-up with nine seconds left in the game put Punahou up 41-38.
The Warriors did not call a timeout and dashed up the court in a desperate attempt to tie the game with a three point field goal gy Kramer Kealoha but it would rim out and Cassidy would grab the rebound at the buzzer.
Punahou, the ILH runner-up, won its first state title since 1999. Kamehameha Hawaii, the BIIF runner-up, came up three points short in its first ever state championship game appearance.

Christian Hernandez may be a little guy, but his big game performance led Farrington to a 70-68 overtime victory over Aiea in the boys division two state basketball championship game at NBC Arena.
Hernandez scored 22 of his game high 27 points in the second half and overtime. His efforts included a 17-of-22 performance from the free throw line.
Leading 55-52 with 5.4 seconds remaining in regulation, Aiea had its leading scorer on the line to close out the win. Obie Woods missed his free throw attempt and Farrington rebounded with a quick outlet to Hernandez. Racing up the court and through a traffic jam of players from both team, Hernandez launched his running prayer from the left wing and it connected at the buzzer to tie the game at 55-55 and force overtime.
Woods nearly pulled off winning the state title for Na Ali`i. Woods carried the scoring load for most of the game with a team high 26 points.
Josh Chung also added 17 points (10-of-14 from the free throw line).
Both teams struggled from the field (Farrington 4-18, Aiea 7-23) in the first half as Na Ali`i led 20-17. The field goal percentage improved in the second half and so did the scoring output for both teams, except from the free throw line.
The Govs (17-3) failed to convert on its free throw opportunities (16-of-25) to build upon a lead in the second half. Aiea (17-1) could not seal the win
(9-of-15) down the stretch from the free throw line.
The game featured 16 ties and 15 lead changes. Aiea led 11-2 early in the first quarter for its biggest lead, while the Governors managed a three point margin late in the third quarter.
A total of 57 fouls were called and 82 free throws were attempted. Four players, two from each side, fouled out during the game.
Both teams normally substitute quite often in their respective games. The Aiea bench outscored (10-8) and outrebounded (8-6) the Farrington bench.
However, the Govs reserves handled the ball better with just two turnovers, compared to the six miscues by the Aiea reserves.
It was the first time since January 2007 (Kaiser defeated Aiea at Aiea High
School) that Aiea lost to an OIA White Division opponent, snapping a winning streak of nearly 30 games.
Aiea had defeated Farrington (regular season at Farrington High School and OIA Championship at McKinley High School) in its two previous meetings.
Farrington 9 8 14 24 15 – 70
Aiea 13 7 11 24 13 – 68
Farrington Leading Performers
Hernandez 27 points, 17-22 FT, 6 rebounds, 5 steals O.Carter 11 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists Kamano 9 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals
