The top high school marksmen from across the state will converge at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 28, in the Hawaii
High School Athletic Association / Civilian Marksmanship Program 10th Annual Air Riflery State Championships.

History of Air Riflery in Hawaii High Schools:

Air riflery became a statewide high school varsity letter sport in Hawaii in 1999. The 2006-07 school year saw its greatest participation with
972 student-athletes competing for 42 schools statewide.  While there is some variation among the leagues on team size and selection processes to the state championship all utilize the sporter air rifle in 3-position competition as a fall sport. Precision air rifles are not allowed. League competition, with the exception of Maui, is primarily team-based with an individual championship ending the season.  Hawaii’s state championship is one of two in the U.S. that are sanctioned by the high school athletic governing body. Georgia is the other state with a sanctioned championship.  Shooters fire 20 record shots in each of the prone, standing and kneeling positions. A perfect score is 600. Teams are made up of four firing members from the same school.

Kahuku rolls past Mililani, 42-13

By Wes Nakama
Honolulu Advertiser

KAHUKU — One year after the Kahuku High School football team suffered a shocking playoff loss at home to end its season, the Red Raiders made good on their vow not to let history repeat itself in 2008.

The Red Raiders raced past Mililani, 42-13, last night in O’ahu Interscholastic Association quarterfinal action before a home crowd of about 3,000 at Carleton E. Weimer Field. Kahuku, the OIA Eastern Division champion, improved to 8-1 overall and will face West runner-up Wai’anae in next week’s semifinals.

Mililani, which started the season 0-3, finished it at 5-5.

The Red Raiders also won the East last year but lost to Kapolei in the quarterfinals, ending their season at 6-3.

Kahuku defensive back Irwin Ah-Hoy said one of the 2007 team captains, Shiloah Te’o, instructed last year’s juniors not to allow their senior season to end the same way.

No. 6 Farrington storms past No. 9 Kapolei

By Paul Honda
Honolulu Starbulletin

The Farrington Governors didn’t just rain on the Kapolei Hurricanes.

They stormed.

Isiah Iuta returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown and hauled in a 36-yard Hail Mary on the final play of the first half as sixth-ranked Farrington ousted No. 9 Kapolei 37-20 last night.

Farrington (7-2), the second seed from the Red East, will face Leilehua next week in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference playoffs. Apelu So’oalo, inspired by the presence of his father, rushed for 119 yards, despite a nagging shoulder injury.

“I want to say thanks to my dad for coming from (American) Samoa for the game,” So’oalo said of Filemu So’oalo. The senior running back moved to Hawaii a year ago and converted from linebacker to running back. He was near tears after receiving leis from his family after the game, but his prowess and the big production of Farrington’s offensive line gave the Hurricanes a dose of misery most of the night.

Farrington amassed 338 total yards, including 202 on the ground (5 yards per carry) behind the front five of Justin Momesea, Lindon Kahana, Paul Kama, Skylawn Folaumahina and Joe Siliga.

Farrington frustrates Kapolei

By Michael Tsai
Honolulu Advertiser

From the car wreck of fumbles, penalties and, well, more fumbles and penalties, Farrington made the most of a bevy of unexpected opportunities to advance past Kapolei, 37-20, in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference playoffs last night at Roosevelt.

Rallying behind a balanced attack of running back Apelu So’oalo, quarterback Dayton Kealoha, and receivers Drake Miller and Ani Isumu, Farrington took advantage of a Kapolei squad that frequently looked disoriented by its snowballing tallies of penalties — including several for having too many players on the field and for delay of game.

The Hurricanes started off impressively enough, repeatedly going to their running backs in a 74-yard opening drive capped by Simione Vehikite’s 1-yard touchdown run.

The Kapolei defense also showed well in its first series, stopping the Farrington run and eventually forcing and recovering a fumble by Isumu.

Kalani bowlers roll to OIA crowns

By Wes Nakama
Honolulu Advertiser

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS — Bowling in adjacent lanes, Kalani sophomore Jonathan Nakagawa and Mililani senior Raymond Allen were each trying to roll their way to an O’ahu Interscholastic Association individual championship yesterday.

In the end, Nakagawa finished a mere 10 pins ahead after six games to capture his first major title at Schofield Barracks Bowling Center. Nakagawa’s pinfall total was 1,291, while Allen took second with 1,281. Kapolei’s Devin Perry was third at 1,270.

“This is the first big thing I’ve won, and it’s always been a goal to win the OIA,” said Nakagawa, who finished 15th as a freshman last year. “I knew where Ray was, because he was in the lane next to me, but I was just trying to bowl for the team, trying to stay consistent and pick up spares.”

Allen rolled a 265 in the fifth game and led with a pinfall total of 1,099, compared to 1,074 for Perry, 1072 for Pearl City’s Derek Suefuji and 1,056 for Nakagawa. But Nakagawa rolled a 235 in the final game, while the other three contenders failed to break 200.
