In semi-final action at the Na Menehune / Reebok Holiday Classic at Moanalua High School, the host Menehune hold off a late rally in the 2nd half to defeat the Owls of Mid Pacific 51-47.  Moanalua will play in the Championship Game Saturday at 7:30p against Kamehameha.

The #9 Na Menehune got off fast in the first quarter with point guard Stevie Austin and super sophomore Marcus Monroe working the offense smoothly.  Mid Pac would handle that initial surge and battle back in the 2nd quarter.

The Owls would really make a game of things in the 3rd quarter as Marcus Holyfield and company began to hit perimeter jump shots as well as get some transition baskets off of their defensive pressure.  Holyfield, only a junior, is described by one opposing coach as a “legitimate D-I prospect”.  So we will keep our eyes out for Marcus.

Key free throws and steady play eventually sealed the victory for the Menehune.  They will meet a Warrior team that has already defeated them once on the Kamehameha campus.  Head Coach Greg Tacon and his crew will be looking to event the record on Saturday.

The defending State Champions have 9 underclassmen on the roster and a potential returning starter no longer with the team.  Senior Chauncey Nicola is still recovering from a broken arm from football season.  What they do have is 6-2 sophomore Desmond Tautofi on the inside, and 5-8 junior guard David Taulang on the outside.   The team of underclassmen was able to step another step up on Coach Kelly Grant’s stepladder to success as they defeat Campbell 63-57, in the consolation bracket of the Na Menehune / Reebok Holiday Classic.

The 4-8 Bulldogs will play Saturday at 3:00p against Laguna Beach from California.  Campbell will play at 12:00n against University.  Saturday is the concluding day of the Tournament and the final tune up for teams before their respective league play starts next week.

Campbell took the lead early with a 14-10 lead after the 1st quarter.  But the Bulldogs started to get their fire lit in the 2nd, outscoring the Sabers 23-12, to take a 33-26 halftime lead.

Joseph Atimua helped to spark the early lead by the Sabers as he punched in 22 points on the night including 4 3-pointers.

Tautofi would begin to make his presence felt in the 2nd half, particularly in the paint as he posed a match up challenge for Campbell.  Tautofi would finish with 11 points as well as being a factor on the boards.
The Bulldogs began to pull away in the 3rd quarter then held off a Campbell rally in the 4th quarter for the victory.  David Taulang led the team with 19 points.  Gabriel Steitzel tossed in 11 points to be the 3rd Bulldog in double figures for points.

Terence Tafai scored 11 points for Campbell.  Michael Makinano added 10 points.

Kamehameha, Iolani, 0-0 Tie

December 27, 2007
by Al Linsky for Digital Sports Hawaii

For More Sports Photos:     Go to www.coach-photos.com

This was a BIG game. The Warriors were on top of the ILH, undefeated through yesterday’s game. The Raiders had lost once and were sitting in second place.

The weather was, well, pretty rotten. There was off and on rain and it looked like it was getting worse, not better. The field would be slow and the wind was blowing pretty hard.

In the first half, the Raiders had the wind at their backs and took advantage as they maintained a field position advantage from the opening gun.

But, no scoring. 0-0 at the half.

In the second half, the Warriors had the wind at their backs and they came out with a new found fire. All of a sudden the ball was staying in front of the Raiders net for extended periods of time.

The Raiders defense held, though, and the Warriors also couldn’t score. The Raiders actually had the better scoring opportunities just missing on a few crosses.

With five minutes left, Raider Ian Watson was red carded. This meant the Raiders would have to play short handed the rest of the way. The 10 vs 11 actually looked pretty even and the game ended in a scoreless tie.

The wrapping paper has yet to be thrown away but it is time for more high school boy’s basketball as the busy early season of tournaments enters the final week.  The Moanalua Na Menehune/Reebok Holiday Classic tipped off its first day with 16 teams playing at the Moanalua High School Gym. The Tournament will continue through Saturday with games starting at 9:00a.

The host team Moanalua Menehune under 2nd year Head Coach Greg Tacon took on Iolani II in their first game.  The Menehune will be looking at returning point guard Steve Austin to guide them this year into the OIA season and post season play.  The Menehune got off to a blazing start and never looked back in defeating the Raiders 72-17.

Scoring power came from 6-3 sophomore Marcus Monroe who had a game high 20 points.  Defensively the Raiders could not get good looks at the basket and were faced with constant pressure.  Matt Koyama had 5 points and Kevin Serai and Jefferey Sakamoto had 4 points each.

Moanalua will play at 6:00p on Thursday.  Iolani II will play in the consolation round at 12:00n.

Buff N Blu Win Tournament Championship

December 22,
2007

David Kawada-Content Editor

dkawada@digitalsports.com

VIEW:     Photo Gallery from photographer Dayne Teves

Coach Dan
Hale has used all 12 players on his roster during this early season schedule.  The depth of this 2007-08 squad became
evident Saturday night as the #1 ranked Buff N Blu held on to defeat a powerful
Benson Polytechnic High School Team, 60-57, to win the championship of their Punahou
Basketball Tournament.

Benson
started off strong as they ran out to a 9 point lead at the end of the 1st
quarter, 19-10.  This team is quick and
athletic, and Jamar Johnson and company continued to put on the pressure,
extending their lead in the 2nd quarter.  Johnson would end up leading all scorers with
21 points and Ameer Shamsud Din also added 20 points on the night.

The halftime
score was 36-22 in favor of Benson and the home crowd was probably thinking
that their 6-0 Puns would most likely taste their first defeat of the early
season.

There is a
term most coaches use, “Not here, not in my house.”

In
basketball there is another common halftime strategy – the first 5 minutes of
the 2nd half can determine the outcome of the game.

After being
dominated in the 1st half, Punahou may have heeded the above
mentioned thoughts and decided to start a whole new ballgame.   The
pivotal 3rd quarter would see the Buff N Blu outscore Benson 19-7,
to cut the lead to 2 points by the end of the quarter at 43-41.

The final
period would be a battle of 2 solid teams going down the stretch.  The teamwork and cohesion that this Punahou team
displays will be something to watch throughout the year as they hold off Benson
for the victory.  Kameron Steinhoff
played another outstanding game leading the scoring with 17 points.  Mantai Te’o, who admits that his offense is
not the best part of his game, proved his own comments wrong by tossing in 16
points, his highest point total of the tournament.  Kimo Makaula and Dalton Hilliard contributed
6 points each, with Hilliard nailing 2 3-pointers.

The Buff N
Blu will conclude their early season schedule next week in the Merv Lopes
Classic as part of the 16-team field.
