The Campbell Lady Sabers made history Friday night at the Stan Sheriff, edging McKinley 57-55 at the overtime buzzer to win the HHSAA Division II girls basketball state championship game.

Ariel Medlin’s frantic putback swished through the net as the buzzer sounded, giving the Sabers their first-ever state basketball title.

“I usually always bank it in; that’s the first time I ever shot it straight in,” said a beaming Medlin after the victory.

Medlin was one of three Campbell players finishing in double figures.  She had 13 points, while Aloha Dias-Kekahuna poured in 15, and Kaitlynn Simmonds added 10.

In the hotly-contested game between OIA rivals, McKinley also had three players score in double figures.  Tatiana Dinson had 15, Pearly Togiai 14, and Allyon Villanueva added 10.  It was McKinley’s first loss since the pre-season after 17 straight conference and tournament victories, while Campbell finished at 17-2.

Ironically, it looked like Campbell might runaway with the game early in the fourth quarter.  The Sabers were up by nine points at 42-33 until the Tigers started firing away from the outside.  Villanueva hit back-to-back huge three pointers to make it a three-point game with about three minutes left, then Kylie Sato tied it with another three pointer at 46-all.  The two teams traded buckets down the stretch and the game went into overtime tied at 48-48.

In the OT, Campbell broke out to a five point lead, but once again McKinley rallied to tie.  Just when everyone thought the game was headed to a second overtime, Dias-Kekahuna drove baseline in the final seconds and missed a highly-contested shot.  But on the third frenetic putback attempt, Medlin just beat the buzzer to win the game.  Bedlam ensued on the Campbell sidelines after that as Saber fans went wild.

Congratulations to the Campbell Lady Sabers, the 2008 Division II girls state basketball champions!

PUNAHOU COMES BACK TO EDGE IOLANI FOR GIRLS TITLE

It took until midway into the fourth quarter for ILH champion Punahou to take
the lead, but once they did, they finished strong as arch-rival Iolani to win
the HHSAA girls basketball Division I state championship, 46-41, Friday night at
the Stan Sheriff Center.

“The girls stepped it up in the third quarter and turned it around, and
sometimes you get a couple of lucky breaks along the way,” said victorious
Buffanblu coach Mike Taylor.  “Give Iolani credit, too, because they played a
great game.”

The difference came from all-state forward Shawna-Lei Kuehu, who scored
16 of her game high 20 points in the second half, including the go-ahead bucket
with just over five minutes left in the contest.  Until that point, Punahou
trailed Iolani almost the entire game.

“She’s the most competitive player I’ve ever seen,” Taylor said.

For the first two quarters, it looked like it was going to be
Iolani’s night to shine.  The Raiders came
out on fire behind sharpshooting guard Chanel Hirata,
who nailed two three-pointers from about 25-feet range and Iolani 16-8 after the
first quarter.  Hirata finished the night with a team high 18 points.

With both Kuehu and high-scoring Iolani center Jamie Smith in foul
trouble, the Raiders were able to hold onto that lead and were up 23-16 at the
half.  Smith finished with just eight points on the night, less than half her
average.

Meanwhile, Kuehu really stepped up her game.  Despite a knee injury
that kept her out all of last year and made her play this season at about
70-percent of her incredible skill level, Kuehu ranged both inside and outside,
hitting short jumpers that helped Punahou come back strong.   When she hit a
fastbreak layup early in the fourth quarter, Iolani’s lead had been cut to just
two at 37-35.

“We believed in ourselves and we believed in each other,” Kuehu said
afterwards.

That confidence showed, and when Kuehu hit a 15-foot jumper from the
foul-line with just over five minutes left, she pumped her fist skyward and let
out an awesome yell.  That bucket put Punahou on top for the first time since
the opening minutes at 39-37.

After that, the Buffanblu played conservatively on offense and made
Iolani foul.  Janelle Nomura hit key free throws to give Punahou a 42-39 lead
with under a minute left.

Iolani had a chance to tie, but a three-pointer from the wing was off
the mark, and Kuehu added four straight free throws in the final seconds to give
the Buffablu their final five point margin of victory and their third title in
the last four years.

“This is the culmination of a lot of hard work,” said Taylor.

Shawna-Lei Kuehu finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds.  Her twin
sister, Shaena-Lyn had seven points and 10 rebounds, and Becca Lau finished with
12 points on the night.  Shawna-Lei was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding
Player.

Congratulations to the Punahou Buffanblu, the 2008 Girls Basketball
Division I State Champions!

WATCH VIDEO CLIPS AND INTERVIEW WITH SHAENA-LYN KUEHU BELOW

#1 Seed Punahou took quick action in defeating Radford 58-28 to advance to the Girls D-I Championship Game for the 4th straight year.  The Lady Buff N Blu, 13-1, will take their #1 State ranking into the Championship Game Friday at 8:00p against ILH rival Iolani, who defeated Waiakea in the other semi-final.

The Championship game will be carried live right here on Digitalsports.com from the Stan Sheriff Center.

Radford falls to 14-2 and will play for 3rd place at 4:00p against Waiakea.

The zone defense by Punahou baffled Radford from the end of the 1st quarter, limiting the Lady Rams to only 2 points from that point through the 3rd quarter.

Buff N Blu senior Shaena-Lyn Kuehu sat out most of the 2nd and 3rd quarters after suffering a mild head injury from an inadvertant elbow.  But the she came in the 4th period with force scoring 9 of her 11 points.

“I was out for so long, I needed to come in and help the team,”said Kuehu.

Sister Shawna-Lei Kuehu led the team with 20 points, 10 of which was scored in the 1st quarter.  Ta Nitra Byrd tossed in 9 points off the bench for the Lady Rams.

Head Coach Mike Taylor will try to win his 3rd State Championship in 4 years on Friday.

KONAWAENA EEKS OUT ONE-POINT WIN OVER KAMEHAMEHA IN BOYS TOURNEY

Konawaena made history Thursday night by holding off Kamehameha down the stretch, winning 54-53 to win their quarterfinal round matchup in the HHSAA boys basketball state tournament at Radford.

“This is a big win for Konawaena and the Big Island,” said Auston Lazoff, who scored a game high 16 points in the one-point victory for the Wildcats.  “We’ve never made it to the semifinals before.”

BIIF champion Konawaena broke open a close game in the third quarter with a suffocating zone defense, holding Kamehameha scoreless for several minutes, and building up a double digit lead.  Besides Lazoff, Darryl Milana played extremely well during that stretch and finished with 15 points on the night.  Midway through the fourth quarter, Konawaena led 48-37.

But then the Warriors, who finished third in the tough ILH race, stepped up their own defense and finally started knocking down some big shots.  Kamehameha scored seven straight points in a span of about a minute to pull within four points at 48-44.

That’s when Lazoff made a big three-point play for Konawaena and Milana hit a key free throw to push the lead back to seven points.  Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they missed several key free-throw opportunities after that, thus giving the Warriors a chance to rally.

In the final seconds, Chaz Bajet knocked down a long three-pointer to bring Kamehameha to within one point, 5-4-53 with 4.3 seconds on the clock.  The Warriors called a quick time-out, then fouled on the inbounds play, but after two straight missed free throws by Konawaena, the Warriors could only get off a desperation half-court heave at the buzzer and the Wildcats prevailed with the one-point victory.

“It got a little crazy there at the end,” said Konawaena head coach Donny Awa, “but we were able to hold on and that’s the most important thing.”

Konawaena now faces ILH runner-up Punahou Friday night at the Blaisdell Arena in the HHSAA semifinals.  Kamehameha moves on to the consolation round.
