OFF THE BENCH: Who Can Truly Dominate?

David Kawada – Content Editor
dkawada@digitalsports.com

In what sport can one player truly dominate a game?  In what team sport can one player, and only
one player, take their team to the Promised Land?

Not football.  Colt
Brennan does not lead Hawaii to an undefeated season without receivers Devone
Bess, Ryan Grice-Mullen, a defense that gets him the ball, and kicker Dan Kelly
in Nevada.

Basketball?  Think
about it.  In the NCAA Tournament did any
of the hot freshmen win the title?  Not
OJ Mayo at USC.    Not Kevin Love at
UCLA.  Not Derrick Rose at Memphis.  But the Kansas team won the NCAA
Championship.

Even Michael Jordan had Scottie Pippen.

How about baseball?
A-Rod is considered the best player in Major League Baseball (when you
are paid $25 million, you should be) and the Yankees haven’t won the Series
with him yet.    Even if you have the
best pitcher, he pitches every 5 games.

Hockey is not in the running because a player is not on the
ice long enough to be a one man show.
Wayne Gretzky, the best hockey player ever, also had an all-star center
in Mark Messier to trade shifts with and goalie Grant Fuhr.

Take a look at one of the top high school softball teams in
the state.  Perennial State contender
Mililani is again leading the OIA West.
On Saturday Pitcher Makani Duhaylonsod pitched another 1-hitter to
defeat a good Leilehua team 4-0.  I have
been watching her pitch in the State Tournament the past couple of years doing
the radio and internet broadcasts.  It
took me 4 innings to get her name correct but I needed only 1 inning to realize
that she was awesome.

Every softball coach has pretty much said the same
thing.  If they have a good dominant pitcher,
their team will be successful.

The beauty about softball is that Duhaylonsod could also pitch
tomorrow.  It is common for one pitcher
to pitch an entire State tournament which runs 4 consecutive days.

It is also common that the best athlete on a softball team
is the pitcher.  Case in point,
Duhaylonsod also had a home run and 2 RBI.

If a softball team has a dominant pitcher like Makani
Duhaylonsod, then even I could play shortstop and the team is still in the
running for a championship.

On the mound Jessie Hathaway limited Anuenue to 3 runs.  At the plate she went 3 for 4 including a home run in the 6th inning to lead Kaiser over Anuenue in OIA White Softball on Wednesday.

“The defense really backed me up today,” said Hathaway.

The defense had no errors and limited the Anuenue offense into stranding runners on base.

For Anuenue, Kala Lewis went 2 for 4.  Offensively they were able to generate 10 hits but could not bring runners around to score.

Kaiser got started early with 4 runs in the 1sr, 3 in the 2nd, and 1 in the 3rd.

Bailey Miller also went 3 for 4 including a triple in the home 6th inning as the Lady Cougars would score 3 runs in that inning to solidify the victory.  Anuenue rallied in the 7th and final inning as they loaded the bases with 2 outs but could not bring a runner home.

Kaiser (8-2) looks good going into the final games of the regular season and hopes to continue post-season play into the HHSAA State D-II Tournament.

OFF THE BENCH: Planting a Seed

David Kawada – Content Editor
dkawada@digitalsports.com

This year there has been a lot of baseball in the high school ranks.  Add to the fact that softball is also in the spring so there is a full dosage of bats, balls, diamonds, and dirt to keep all of us fans occupied.  As I go  to various ballparks on school campuses and community fields around town, I have become acutely aware of probably the most common thread amongst them all.

Sunflower seeds.

Somewhere in the history of baseball, the sunflower seed has also become the national pastime as the snack of choice at ball games.  It does not matter if it is baseball or softball, night or day game, male or female.  One out of every 3 fans at any park is consuming sunflower seeds.  The piles of seeds underneath the bleachers confirm this fact.

No other sport has such an exclusive connection with one type of snack.  It rivals the relationship between watching a movie and popcorn (gotta have it).

What is the fascination of this product?  My theories are these:

Healthy snack – you can eat 3 bags in a 7–inning game and feel like you ate nothing.

Convenience- requires neither a cooler, pre-game preparation, or other carrying case.  Fits right in your pocket .

Allows for  interaction – unlike a hot dog or a beverage, if a foul ball is coming your way, no big loss if you drop a few sunflower seeds

Low maintenance – just spit the seeds on the ground

This is why parks maintenance crews **** baseball and softball games.
