KAHUKU — Quietly and effectively, Kahuku completed its second straight unbeaten O’ahu Interscholastic Association football regular season last night, holding off Castle, 35-20, before a homecoming crowd of about 3,000 at Carleton E. Weimer Field.

The Red Raiders, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser’s statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 7-1 overall with its seventh straight victory and finished 6-0 in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division. They earned the East’s No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming league playoffs.

Castle, which has also earned a playoff berth, fell to 4-4, 3-3.

Kahuku opened the season with a 35-0 loss to Kamehameha, casting doubt on the Red Raiders’ chances of repeating as East champ.

“We use that game (the Kamehameha loss) to push us forward,” said senior running back St. John Lessary, who rushed for 143 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries last night. “We remember how that feels, and it makes us work harder in practice.”

The Knights came out with a no-huddle offense and moved the ball well in the first quarter, with quarterback Blake Rapozo completing 7 of 10 passes for 75 yards. But on their second drive, Rapozo was sacked for an 11-yard loss and broke his left collarbone.

CASTLE (4-4, 3-3) 6 0 0 14—20

KAHUKU (7-1, 6-0) 0 15 14 6—35
