Kahuku takes OIA Red crown over Moanalua

by Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

Stretched to the limit of its endurance, Moanalua needed a minor miracle to get past top-seeded Kahuku.

The Red Raiders refused to surrender, capturing the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference volleyball title with a thrilling 25-18, 21-25, 28-26, 22-25, 15-13 win last night at McKinley Student Council Gym.

Kahuku, 16-0 in league play and ranked No. 3 in the Star-Bulletin Girls Volleyball Top 10, earned a seeded berth in the Division I state tournament and will have a first-round bye. Moanalua (12-5) was heroic despite playing its third match in three nights.

A win by Na Menehune in the double-elimination format would have forced Kahuku to play one more match for the league title, but the Red Raiders had too much strength at the net and too much hustle in the back row.

Nile Te’o led Kahuku with 15 kills, including four in the final set.

Kahuku tops Moanalua for Red Conference title

By Wes Nakama
Honolulu Advertiser

Kahuku completed a perfect O’ahu Interschoastic Assocation girls volleyball season in thrilling fashion last night by holding off Moanalua, 25-18, 21-25, 28-26, 22-25, 15-13, for the Red Conference championship.

The Red Raiders finished 16-0 in league play and will receive the OIA’s top seed and a first-round bye in next week’s state tournament.

Na Menehune ended up 13-4 in league play, with all four losses coming to Kahuku.

Last night’s 2 1/2-hour marathon at McKinley’s Student Council Gym ended at 10:55 p.m., and was Moanalua’s third five-set match in as many days.

Kahuku defeated Na Menehune in Tuesday’s semifinals and Moanalua outlasted Farrington in Wednesday’s elimination match.

2008 HHSAA Cross-Country State Championships

The course was tough. The weather was nice for running, not too hot, some light rain at times and a slight, cool breeze.

This course is at about 3000′ altitude. Add in “THE HILL”, which the athletes had to run twice, and there were casualties and some of them were among the elite athletes which meant important changes in the team results.

On the girls side it was Punahou who successfully defended their championship in fine style, having all 5 scorers finish in the top 20. I felt that Seabury Hall was the only team that had a decent chance of dethroning the Buffanblu, but the course claimed one of their best runners to squash their chances. Seabury Hall ended up second, the same position as last year.

Kamehameha-Kapalama who showed strength all season, took third, led by the steadily improving Ashlee Jiminez who placed third overall.

‘Iolani, who started out as a favorite at the beginning of the year, was beset by injuries and illness all year but managed to edge out another favorite, Mililani, for fourth.

The top 10 girls were Bailey Massenburg, Tia Greenwell, Ashlee Jiminez, Julie Besenbruch, Hailey Grossman, Kristin Ali-Keith, Farrah Madanay, Jenna Wong, Amanda Tamanaha and Haley Abing.

Leilehua defended their boys championship led by a gutsy performance from 3 time State Champ Bryce Jenkins. Bryce was very limited by injuries this season and only started running again in the past few weeks. He obviously succeeded greatly in his non-running training regimen.

Kamehameha-Kapalama had a strong showing to place second.

‘Iolani had dominated the ILH season this year and many expected them to win the team title. One of their top athletes, after being in the hunt throughout most of the race, fell to a probable case of severe dehydration to drop the Raiders to third.

Hilo and Honoka’a rounded out the top 5 teams.

The top 10 boys were Bryce Jenkins, Matt Nakamoto, Mark Turner, Margarito Martinez, Reid Hunter, Christian Putegnat, Jake Shiraki, Tyler Mulloy, Troy Esaki and Jodan Thibodeau.

Ajimine wins it all
Honolulu Star-Bulletin

There are no more pins for Kalani’s Dara Ajimine to knock down.

Ajimine wrapped up her high school bowling career with her third straight state championship yesterday, adding an elusive team title for Kalani.

The Falcons beat Kapolei by 149 pins thanks to a furious finish, while Ajimine, who won by a single pin last year, beat Venny Jean Turner of Sacred Hearts by a hefty 83 pins. She sealed it with a 200 in the final round.

“Winning the team championship means a lot to me,” Ajimine said. ” We haven’t won the state championship in a long time, so I wanted to get it done since I am a senior.”

It was Kalani’s first state title since it repeated in 1994. The Falcons blew away the Warriors with 873 pins in the final round to Kapolei’s 808. The Falcons averaged 861 pins over the final four rounds as their shuffled lineup meshed.

Kalani had Ajimine in the anchor position throughout the season, but coach Colin Matsuo switched things up after a loss to Mililani in the OIA tournament. He put junior Janelle Takahata in the important slot for the state tournament, and she responded with a 33rd-place finish. Brandi Kawamoto came in 23rd, Chayna Matsuo was 32nd and Kayla Takara wound up 35th.

Kalani’s Ajimine makes it 3 in row
Honolulu Advertiser

Kalani’s Dara Ajimine became the first three-time state bowling champion yesterday, winning the Billy Tees/HHSAA Bowling State Championships by 83 pins at Lihu’e Bowling Center on Kaua’i.

Ajimine, a senior, rolled a three-game series of 575 yesterday for a 1,752 total. She also led after the first round with a six-game total of 1,177.

“It’s exciting,” Ajimine said. “I put a lot of pressure on myself. I really wanted it.”

Baldwin’s Corey Gushikuma won the boys crown with 1,788 pins to become the first Maui Interscholastic League bowler to win a boys state title since 1979.

Ajimine won the 2006 girls state title at the Lihue Bowling Center and claimed last year’s crown by one pin at Hilo Lanes.
