Red Raiders hold off Chargers, 1-0, for first finals appearance

By Wes Nakama

“Red Raider Nation” will enter unchartered territory tonight, as Kahuku makes what is believed to be its first appearance in an O’ahu Interscholastic Association girls soccer championship game.

The Red Raiders, who finished fifth in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division, continued their improbable run through the postseason with a 1-0 victory over West runner-up Pearl City last night at Roosevelt’s Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

They improved to 6-5-4 in league play and will face West champ Mililani (13-0-1) in tonight’s 6:30 title game at the same venue.

“It feels good,” said Kahuku sophomore Zhane Santiago, who scored the game’s only goal last night in the 16th minute. “We’re the underdogs, but we’ve got adrenaline and we’re more hyped. Everybody is playing together.”

That was exhibited on Santiago’s goal, her fourth of the week.

Amber Abregano spun and centered the ball to Kaylee Au near the top of the penalty box, and Au then pushed it to Santiago on the right side, about 15 yards out. Santiago controlled the pass, squared toward the goal and shot it across to the lower left corner of the net.

“My coach (Krisha Kai) taught me to be calm,” Santiago said. “I just tried to pop it into the corner.”

They finish goals, and each other’s sentences too.

“We just want to succeed … ” started Mililani junior forward Mari Miyashiro.

“So we work off each other and help each other out,” senior forward Chelsey Goo finished.

Goo scored in the first half and Miyashiro added one in the second half for the Trojans in their 2-0 win over Kapolei in the O’ahu Interscholastic Association semifinals last night at Roosevelt High School’s Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

Mililani plays Kahuku tonight at Roosevelt at 6:30 for the championship. The White championship game between Wai’anae and Kailua is at 4 p.m.

Mililani (13-0-1), the only undefeated team in the OIA, and Kapolei already have spots in the state tournament, along with Pearl City and Kahuku. The Red Raiders beat the Chargers, 1-0, in the other semifinal game.

Kahuku boys pull away from Kalaheo

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

KAHUKU — Even without its marquee player, Kahuku had too much for Kalaheo last night and pulled away for a 52-36 victory in O’ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball action.

The Red Raiders improved to 3-0 in the Red Conference Eastern Division, while the defending East champion Mustangs dropped to 2-1.

Despite the tough road obstacle, Kalaheo actually looked to be in good position to steal an upset win early on as Kahuku guard Jray Galeai — a first-team OIA East all-star last season — was in Provo, Utah, on a football recruiting visit to Brigham Young University.

The Mustangs also did a good job defending another sharp-shooting starting guard, junior Nehoa Akina, to five points. Kalaheo even led 20-14 late in the first half before the Red Raiders rallied to forge a 20-20 halftime tie.

But the Mustangs suffered through a 5 1/2-minute scoring drought overlapping the end of the third period and the early part of the fourth, during which Kahuku stretched a 32-29 lead into a 47-31 advantage. Kalaheo finally broke the run on Richard Preza-Haynes’ jumper with 4:24 remaining, but that would be it until both teams emptied their benches with under two minutes left and the score 50-33.

Kahuku torches Kalaheo’s box-and-1 ‘D’

By Paul Honda

When Hiram Akina speaks, the Kahuku Red Raiders listen.
Reminded last night by their coach about Kahuku’s struggles against Kalaheo in recent years, the Red Raiders broke away from a 20-all stalemate for a 52-36 rout of the Mustangs before 400 fans at Thomas Walker Gym.

Third-ranked Kahuku overcame a box-and-one defense by Kalaheo and went on a 27-11 run in the second half to secure a key win in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East. The Red Raiders improved to 8-1, 3-0 in the conference by beating Kalaheo for the first time in three seasons.

“I know Chico (Furtado). I knew they’d go box, especially with Jray (Galeai) not there,” Akina said. Galeai, a Star-Bulletin All-State/Fab 15 guard, is at BYU for a football recruiting visit.

Kona Schwenke had nine points and eight rebounds, and Aulola Tonga had eight points, seven boards and two steals to anchor Kahuku under the glass.

“We went upstairs (at halftime) and Coach said we looked tired and talked about how we’d lost to them the past couple of years,” Tonga said, noting that Kahuku hadn’t beaten its nemesis since his freshman year in 2006.

Nehoa Akina, the focus of Kalaheo’s box-and-one defense, finished with eight points, but it was his backcourt buddies who came through.

Kalaheo shoots past Kaimuki in Red East

Honolulu Advertiser
by Wes Nakama

Fernandez scores 29, Gasparine 23 in 66-60 win to improve to 2-0

The Mustangs improved to 2-0 in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division, with another showdown tomorrow night at Kahuku (2-0). Kaimuki, which lost to Kahuku in its regular-season opener, fell to 0-2.

Kalaheo had edged Farrington, 46-43 in overtime, in its OIA Red East opener last week.

“We needed that win,” said Gasparine, a sturdy 6-foot-1 senior forward who finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds last night. “We had the momentum, and we knew Kaimuki was coming off a loss, so we thought it would be hard for them.”

Fernandez, a 6-2 junior guard who had a game-high 29 points including seven 3-pointers, presented the outside threat with 16 points in the first half. Thirteen of those came in the second period, including three 3-pointers.

His 3-pointer from the left corner put the Mustangs up, 21-11, two minutes into the second quarter, but the Bulldogs rallied to close it to 28-26 by halftime after center Desmond Tautofi scored on a layup with six seconds remaining.
