Kahuku upends Punahou to make semis
By Paul Honda

The third time was, oddly enough, not quite the charm for the Punahou Buffanblu.

Kahuku, which played Punahou twice in December, pulled it off again with a heart-stopping 40-39 win last night at Jim Alegre Gymnasium in the Division I quarterfinals of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships.

Down one point, Punahou had the ball with 11 seconds left after Jray Galeai missed the front side of a 1-and-1. Kahuku, with two team fouls to give until the bonus, used them wisely. Dalton Hilliard drove through the middle, but was fouled by Galeai with 4.5 seconds left.

On the ensuing play, Nehoa Akina tipped away a pass by Punahou’s Henry Cassiday to Robby Toma, leaving 1.9 seconds on the clock. Hilliard’s inbounds pass from the sideline to the basket area was intercepted by Kahuku’s Irwin Ah-Hoy, ending the game. That gave a massive Kahuku following at Alegre Gym plenty to cheer about.

Second-seeded Kahuku (23-2), champion of the Oahu Interscholastic Association, advanced to the semifinals and will play ‘Iolani tonight at 7 in Blaisdell Arena.

Kahuku tops Punahou, 40-39
Wes Nakama
Honolulu Advertiser

In a boys basketball state quarterfinal game that lived up to its championship hype, Kahuku held off Punahou, 40-39, last night before a raucous near-capacity crowd of about 1,600 at Radford’s James Alegre Gym.

The No. 2 seed and O’ahu Interscholastic Association champ Red Raiders improved to 18-1 in the regular and postseason and will face Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up ‘Iolani (12-2) in tonight’s 7 o’clock semifinal at Blaisdell Arena.

Kahuku led 38-31 after Kona Schwenke’s layup with 2:48 remaining, but the defending champion Bufanblu (10-7) scratched their way back and closed to 40-39 on Shane Yoshiyama’s 3-pointer with 16.6 seconds left. The Red Raiders were fouled after the ensuing inbounds pass but missed both double-bonus free-throw attempts with 11 seconds remaining.

With two fouls to give before getting into the bonus, the Red Raiders fouled twice in the backcourt and then knocked away a pass to the right corner with 1.9 ticks left. Punahou then lofted a pass from the right sideline to the far side of the basket for 6-foot-7 center Josh Taylor, but Irwin Ah-Hoy leaped and intercepted the ball, securing it as time expired.

Disciplined Kapaa ousts Word of Life

By Brian McInnis
Honolulu Star Bulletin

Kapaa ran with run-and-gun Word of Life for 27 minutes.

When it got to crunch time, however, the Warriors valued possessions and buckled down defensively for a 66-58 victory in the opening round of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball Division II State Championships last night at Farrington.

Neither team earned separation of more than six points until Kapaa went on an 11-1 run in the fourth quarter to turn a 52-all game into a double-digit lead.

The Warriors (7-3) advanced to face top-seeded Castle (15-2) today at 7 p.m. at Farrington.

Kekoa Prem led the way for the Kauai Interscholastic Federation champions with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Warriors coach Phillip Baclayon estimated it had been 10 years since Kapaa had made it to state play on any level, and his players turned that into extra incentive to move on.

Punahou beats Campbell

By Jason Kaneshiro
Honoulu Star Bulletin

Punahou didn’t exactly burn up the nets last night. The way the Buffanblu played defense, they didn’t need to.

Punahou advanced in its quest to defend its state title with a 51-32 win over Campbell in the first round of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball Division I State Championships at Jim Alegre Gymnasium.

The Buffanblu shot just 37 percent from the field in the game, but limited the Sabers to 11 second-half points to pull away and set up a quarterfinal matchup with Kahuku tonight.

“That’s what we’ve been preaching all year,” Punahou coach Dan Hale said. “Sometimes the ball doesn’t fall too well, and we have to rely on defense. I was really proud of the boys fighting against a very good team and kept up that defensive pressure all the way.”

The Buffanblu will face the OIA Red champion and second-seeded Red Raiders for the third time this season at 7 p.m.

Taylor Crabb scored a game-high 12 points, including 7 of 8 free throws in the second half, to help the Buffanblu pull away from the Sabers in the final two periods at Radford.

Defending state champion Punahou improved to 10-6 and will play No. 2 seed and O’ahu Interscholastic Association champ Kahuku (17-1) in tonight’s 7 o’clock quarterfinal at Radford.

The Buffanblu led from start to finish last night, but Campbell (12-5) closed to 26-23 on Zachery Manuel’s layup with 4:51 remaining in the third period.

Punahou, the ILH’s third-place team, then finished the quarter with a 9-4 run to lead 35-27 entering the fourth and made 12 of 16 free throws in the final period to seal the victory.

The Sabers, who finished fourth in the OIA, were limited to 11 points in the second half — and just five in the fourth quarter.

“A lot of our turnovers were unforced errors, but (the Buffanblu) also did a lot to put pressure on us in the backcourt,” Campbell coach Zaricke Jackson said. “They were physical, and we couldn’t finish shots even when we were open.”

With starting forward Kai Gaddis out with a dislocated elbow, Punahou got a big boost from senior guard Shane Yoshiyama, who was making just his fourth start of the season.

Kahuku takes Red title
By Jason Kaneshiro

The intensity continued to climb even as points came at a trickle.

In the end, Kahuku was able to wring just enough points out of the rims at Jim Alegre Gymnasium to outlast Kaimuki 39-36 and capture the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference championship last night.

The teams treated the packed house to a seesaw battle in their fifth meeting of the season, with the Red Raiders coming through in the final minutes to defeat the Bulldogs for the second time in a three-day span.

“All five times it was a dogfight,” Kahuku coach Hiram Akina said. “We really work hard to finish games. We were prepared for this. I think the people had more fun watching us play. I enjoyed it from the sideline. It was awesome.”

The win gave Akina his second OIA Red title in as many seasons, though with two different teams. He led Mililani to the championship a year ago, and the Red Raiders secured the OIA’s seeded berth in this week’s state tournament with last night’s win.

This time Akina found the Red Raiders trailing 33-30 with less than 4 minutes left. Nehoa Akina, the coach’s son, then drained a tough fall-away 3-pointer from the right side to tie the game and a midrange jumper by Irwin Ah-Hoy then gave Kahuku the lead for good with 1:04 left.

Kahuku rallies past Kaimuki to capture OIA Red crown

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Kahuku held off Kaimuki, 39-36, last night for its second O’ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball championship in five years before a raucous near-capacity crowd of about 1,500 at Radford’s James Alegre Gym.

The Red Raiders improved to 17-1 in the regular and postseason and will receive the OIA’s top seed and first-round bye in this week’s state tournament. Kaimuki fell to 12-5 and will begin state tournament play in Wednesday’s first round.

Kahuku took a circuitous route to last night’s title game, having to win three straight games under the OIA tournament’s new modified double-elimination tournament after losing to Kaimuki in a fourth-round game on Feb. 21.

“It was a humbling experience, but I think it made us a better team,” said Kahuku senior guard Irwin Ah-Hoy, who hit a 17-foot jumper with 1:03 remaining to give the Red Raiders their first lead, 35-33, since the first period. “It made us stay focused and think about basketball all the time.”

Castle overcomes Kailua
By Jason Kaneshiro
Honolulu Star Bulletin

Jeff Hiro drew up the play.

K.J. Aipia and Nick Tuamoheloa executed to perfection.

The result was Castle’s first Oahu Interschaolastic Association White Conference basketball championship.

With the Knights trailing Windward Oahu rival Kailua by two points with 13.4 seconds left, Hiro designed a play for Aipia to take the inbounds pass and look to score or kick the ball out to Tuamoheloa on the wing.

His path to the basket cut off, Aipia selected the latter option and Tuamoheloa coolly drilled a 3-pointer from the left side with 7 seconds left to lift Castle to a dramatic 37-36 victory over the Surfriders last night at Jim Alegre Gymnasium.

“It’s just an unbelievable feeling,” said Tuamoheloa, who led the Knights with 11 points. “There was space, I was going up right there.”

Along with its first OIA White title, and first of any kind since 1970, Castle earned the OIA’s seeded berth in this week’s HHSAA Division II state tournament.

Castle rallies for OIA White title

By Kalani Takase
Advertiser Staff Writer

Led by some last-second heroics by Nick Tuamoheloa, Castle won its first O’ahu Interscholastic Association White Division title with a 37-36 thrilling victory over rival Kailua yesterday.

A crowd of about 600 at Radford’s Jim Alegre Gymnasium saw the Knights (14-3) claim just their second league basketball title (the other was in 1970) and clinch the OIA’s top seed in next week’s Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA State Tournament. Kailua (14-4) and third-place finisher Roosevelt have also earned berths.

“This is a huge win for the program,” Castle coach Jeff Hiro said. “Hopefully it brings back some exposure back to Kane’ohe that we haven’t had in the past few years.”
