Bears fall to Surfriders

WAILUKU — Despite showing several signs of promise, the Baldwin High School football team needed 47 minutes, 48 seconds to score a touchdown Saturday night at War Memorial Stadium.

The late score didn’t prevent the Bears from losing 20-9 to Kailua in their lone nonleague game of the season, but it did show they can put their three-week break to good use.

The final touchdown came with 12 seconds on the clock on a 16-yard pass from Brock Shishido to Brady Carone. It was set up by a remarkable catch by Ro Wilson, who cradled a 27-yard Shishido pass while laying on his back near the right sideline two plays earlier.

Wilson, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound junior, showed himself to be a forceful part of the Bears’ arsenal with seven catches for 129 of the 172 passing yards that Shishido had on the night.

”Ro stepped up, like I said, we had guys step up,” Baldwin coach A.J. Roloos said. ”Triple teams, double teams, he was making catches all over the place.”

Last-minute touchdown sends Anuenue past Kamehameha

PUKALANI — The Kamehameha Schools Maui football team scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to tie the score, but Anuenue reached the end zone with 45 seconds remaining and won 26-20 in both teams’ preseason opener Saturday night at Kanaiaupuni Stadium.

The Warriors’ Bryson Souza threw a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, first to Terani Richmond with 11:55 remaining and then to Chase Bell with 7:17 to go. A Nicholas Lopes extra point after the second touchdown tied the score at 20.

On Na Koa’s ensuing drive, they lost a fumble on the Warriors’ 37-yard line. A bad snap by Kamehameha on the next play gave the ball back, however, with just over three minutes remaining, and Anuenue went on the game-winning drive, capped by Kalani Puaoi’s 3-yard touchdown run.

Ikaika Gante ran 12 times for 137 yards and a touchdown for Anuenue, and Puaoi had 79 yards on 10 carries. Kanani Armitage, who ran for 72 yards on nine carries, scored a third-quarter touchdown.

High school football: Na Alii open with loss
By ROBERT COLLIAS, Staff Writer

PUKALANI — On offense or defense, there was way too much of the Tauai brothers for the King Kekaulike High School football team to handle on Friday night.

Phil Tauai accounted for three offensive touchdowns and his brother, Eddie Tauai, ran for a game-high 86 yards and had a 29-yard fumble return for a touchdown to lead Kalaheo to a convincing 34-7 win over Na Alii in the first prep football game of the season, at King Kekaulike Stadium.

”That’s a bad question,” King Kekaulike coach J.W. Kenton said when asked his first impressions. ”We needed to settle down and we settled down defensively, but offensively we never settled down and that was a shame because I thought we were going to be all right.”

The Tauais combined for 158 of the Mustangs’ 215 rushing yards and Phil Tauai passed for 60 more.

Perhaps it was the first two plays of the second half, with Kalaheo leading 14-0, that epitomized this game.

OFF THE BENCH

OFF THE BENCH

Why Should We Save Our Athletic Programs?

Or the arts programs?
Or student government?  Or service
clubs?  I could give the politically
correct answer.  But I’d rather reflect
on some memories of my high school friends.

One friend was a year older, and the nicest guy you could
meet.   Also one of the brightest in the school.  He would end up the valedictorian of his
class and, believe it or not, scored a 780 on his SAT.  That means he only missed one question!

He was also a mean tennis player.  Played #1 singles his junior and senior year.
His teammates said that he was super competitive and would no sooner slam a
ball right at you at the net, then apologize immediately after the match.

When I congratulated him on his good SAT score, he humbly
smiled and shrugged his shoulders.  Said
it was no big thing.  After further
prodding, he admitted that he wanted to beat the score of another classmate who
had been rumored, and heralded to be the smartest in the senior class.

COMPETITION.  DESIRE
TO BE BETTER.  Game – set – match.  This friend went to MIT.

Another friend struggled in class.  Could barely perform at his grade level.  Did bad things and dropped out of high
school.  Now he had more time to
surf.  Then he ran into an old youth
football coach.  He found out my friend
wasn’t going to school.  Coach wanted to
slap him.  But instead told him something
that proved to be crucial to his view on school.

“Why didn’t you play football?”  coach said.
“You could play, boy.  You got
talent.”

Nobody told my friend he was “good” before.

He got back in school and lifted weights, stayed
academically eligible to play football.
Found a connection between his enjoyment in sports and a career.  He wanted to be a PE teacher and coach.  He eventually went to a small college, and played
football too

ADVERSITY.  TALENT IN
SPORTS.  ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITY.  Currently is a teacher and got his master’s
degree.

We should save our sports.
